Once upon a time, I was young and in university and breathing photography. Before that, I was young and in high school and breathing photography. Before that, I was young and in middle school and breathing writing. Before that, I was young and in grade school and breathing writing.
I think photography and writing may be my things.
I've always enjoyed drawing. My minor in university was studio art. But I'm beginning to realize that I just... don't have the eye. My artwork is complimented politely but frequently flops commercially. I have no depth perception (literally, my depth perception is almost zero), which allows me to capture unusual perspectives in photographs but warps the perspective and proportions in my drawings. I joke with Hunter that even her scraps get favorited more than my most elaborate works, but she can tell it bothers me. And it isn't that shallow of an issue. When I sold artwork with a Navy friend to finance our weekend trip to the San Francisco Pride Festival in '08, my friend sold twice what I could, twice as quickly. Every artistic contest and competition I have participated in, I haven't. Even. Placed.
Maybe I'm just not that kind of artist.
I dropped my shutterbug fixation a couple years after I left university, disenchanted from the crushing train of kids snapping Myspace pics and calling it photography. Setting up photo shoots, cruising for candid shots, taking rolls and rolls of film, developing film, making prints (traditionally in high school, then digitally in university). It was all so much fun and so easy for me that I eventually decided it just wasn't good enough, it wasn't enough work. It wasn't credible enough for anyone to take me seriously.
While I'm far away from the honest aspirations I had towards National Geographic fame in university, I miss photography too much to be as cynical and depressed as I have been about it.
I'm a photographer. I think I'm ready to try again.
